Balancing Full-Time Work While Completing Your Dissertation
Let me be honest with you from the jump… It was miserable.
Not in a dramatic, made-for-TV way. Just the quiet, grinding, relentless kind of miserable that comes from having too much to do and not enough of anything to do it with. Time. Energy. Bandwidth. All of it stretched thin.
In the beginning, the misery was manageable. I was alone. No relationship, no real obligations outside of work and school. A date here and there didn't create much disruption. I was protective of my dissertation… Almost possessive about it. I had carved out space for it, and I guarded that space.
And then it happened.
I was toward the end of my suspension when I met my now wife. I couldn't go into that relationship with the suspension hanging over my head, so I wrote the letter, requested readmission, said what I needed to say about using available resources and being more careful… Blah, blah, blah… And got back to work.
But everything I had built around my dissertation… The structure, the protection, the time, was gone. Completely dismantled. Work, a new relationship, and a dissertation were now competing for the same hours, the same energy, the same version of me.
I lost ground. There's no way around that. I had to figure it out.
And then we added travel.
I was submitting assignments from every corner of the world. Getting up at 3am to meet with my Chair. Navigating time zones, hotel WiFi, and a relationship that was still finding its footing, all while trying to finish a doctoral study. The misery hit a whole new level.
But somewhere in the middle of all of it, I stopped fighting the chaos and started mastering it. I figured out how to work, travel, love somebody well, and still move the dissertation forward. Not perfectly. Not on anyone else's timeline. But forward.
Then I lost my job.
You'd think that would free up time. It did not. The challenges were relentless… They just changed shape. There was always something. Always a reason it would have been completely reasonable to stop.
I didn't stop.
And when I heard those words… Congratulations, Dr. Wolfe. Every bit of the figuring out made sense. Not just because I had the degree. But because of who I had become in the process of earning it.
Here's what years of working, living, loving, and dissertating at the same time actually built in me:
Critical thinking - When everything is competing for your attention, you get very good at evaluating what actually matters and what can wait.
Prioritization - Not everything deserves the same urgency. Learning to triage in work, relationships, and research is a skill that doesn't leave you.
Multitasking - The real kind. Not doing three things poorly. Holding multiple complex things at once without dropping what matters most.
Resilience - Every time life hit, I adjusted and kept moving. Through the suspension, the committee, the job loss, the 3am meetings. I kept moving.
Adaptability - Submitting from airports and hotel rooms teaches you to work in conditions that aren't ideal. That skill transfers everywhere.
Discipline - I protected the dissertation even when everything was working against it. That's not natural. That's built.
Time management - Not the productivity-hack kind. The real kind, earned through years of having too much to do and not enough time to do it.
Compartmentalization - Knowing when to be the partner, the employee, the doctoral student, and being able to shift between them without losing the thread of any of it.
Self-advocacy - I learned to fight for myself, my time, and my place in this process. That doesn't go away when the dissertation is done.
The study, the methodology, the research, the writing… All of it made me who and what I am today.
Not just Dr. Wolfe. But the version of Dr. Wolfe who knows how to handle what's hard.
