5 Reasons ABD Students Get Stuck And How to Move Forward
I never wanted to be ABD.
Not because I didn't understand the process… I did. But ABD always felt like a place people passed through, not a place they stayed. I was not going to be that person. I came too far, sacrificed too much, and had too much to prove to stop anywhere short of done.
And then life happened.
I got tired. Real tired… The kind that sleep doesn't fix. I lost my job. I got sick. I lost family members I had been holding space for in my finish line vision… People I wanted to look into the crowd and see on graduation day.
And then I lost my Dad.
We didn't have a perfect relationship. But I knew… I knew… If he could witness this moment, he would be proud. He got his high school diploma the same year my sister graduated from high school. That detail has never left me. And when he was gone, I found myself deep in my head about not having either of my parents there to physically witness what was about to happen.
I had to search. Search deep. For a reason worth all of it… The crashing out, the headaches, the sleepless nights, the money, the tears. A reason worth finishing for when the people you wanted to finish for are no longer here to see it.
I found it.
I didn't come this far to come this far. I was put here to be my ancestors' wildest dream. And that didn't stop being true just because my Dad wasn't going to be in the audience.
If you're ABD and you're stuck, I want you to know that your reason for being stuck is real. And I want you to know there's a way through it. Here are the five most common reasons doctoral students stall and what to do about each one.
1. You've lost your "why."
You started this program for a reason. Somewhere between the coursework, the committee feedback, and the years that have passed, that reason got buried. When the degree itself stops feeling like enough, you need something deeper… Something personal, ancestral, relational, or legacy-driven. Find it. Write it down. Put it somewhere you'll see it on the hard days.
2. You're isolated.
The doctoral journey is lonely by design. Your non-doctoral friends don't fully get it. Your cohort has scattered. Your committee is busy. That isolation creates a silence that can start to feel like confirmation that you should stop. It isn't. Find your people… A coach, a mentor, a writing group, a peer who's a few steps ahead.
3. You're in a cycle of perfectionism.
Done is better than perfect. Your dissertation does not have to be your magnum opus… It has to be complete and defensible. Perfectionism is one of the most sophisticated forms of self-sabotage, and it shows up hardest in the final stretch when the stakes feel highest.
4. Life got in the way & never fully got out of the way.
Jobs, illness, family loss, financial stress… None of these care about your dissertation timeline. And none of them disqualify you from finishing. They just mean you need a different kind of support and a more realistic plan. Grief doesn't have a graduation deadline. Neither does your degree.
5. You don't have a clear next step.
Sometimes being stuck isn't emotional… It's structural. You don't know what to write next, what your committee actually wants, or how to move from where you are to where you need to be. Paralysis disguised as procrastination. The fix isn't motivation. It's clarity.
You didn't come this far to come this far.
Whatever is keeping you stuck right now… The grief, the exhaustion, the lost "why," the blank page… It's not bigger than your reason for starting. And if you can't find that reason right now, that's exactly what PhinisheD Doc is here to help you uncover. You don't have to figure this out alone.
